IMPROVING SPEAKING COMPETENCE THROUGH PUPPET STORY TELLING

Teaching speaking is one the challenging for teacher to make the students competence in speaking. Teaching English by using media of puppet is interesting to tell the story. These activities make the students more confidence and increase in understanding the content of story. Puppet is media that simple and amusing for the students. The students can be helped with this media when they do the story telling. The story telling that do in a group also make the students more understand in the understanding and listening the story.

Using puppet to teach speaking competence increase the students in speaking skill. This media is good and interesting for students to make the students fluent and understand the story. This media is simple but give many advantages in teaching English. This media of puppet is effective for students to teach speaking skill.

Story telling is one of speaking ability that difficult to do in speaking competency. To tell the story need the expression and interesting media. From the observation many students tell story by memorizing the text without using expressing in telling the story so it is only reading the text. Teaching speaking is challenging for teacher to make the students competence in speaking.

Puppet is one of visual media that have many advantages. Newby, Spetich, Lehman and Russell (2000:103) states that visual have three advantages. First, visual can be used as the clear information to increase the memory. For example visual can see something that real and abstract give the visual about process and procedure which identify the small things, describe the similarity  and differences so it can increase the communication. Secondly, visual can be used to show the thousand of words so that it can increase the efficiency of communicating. Thirdly, visual with many kind of shapes and color can increase the attention and stimulate the thinking to make interesting.

Teaching speaking is the challenging for teacher to teach English. This activity is not interesting if the teachers do not design and prepare this activity. One of the teaching media that are interesting and creative is puppet. This media are simple, cheap, interesting, enjoying and amusing . The students can be helped with this media.

The teachers and the students get many advantages to use the media because the students get many improvement with this media. From the observation, questioners and practicing the puppet story telling , it gets many benefit. These activity do by the teaching prepare the media of listening  audio , pictures and puppets to prepare the teaching and learning process. The students listened  the story  after that they told the story using puppet. To be more practice they do puppet story telling in group. This activity make many students enjoying, entertaining, amusing, remembering, understanding the story. They said that they become more fluency in speaking ability.

The puppet story telling which is done in group activity make the students enjoy in listening the story. They know many kinds of stories from their friends, they become more confidence, relax in story telling. They can peer correction to their friend, get moral value from the story and  strengthen their friendship.

Puppet story telling will increase and improve the students in the speaking competence. The students enjoy in learning activity and they get many benefit and advantages from this activity.
